This drug is an “atypical” neuroleptic . Some of its side effects are less marked than those of conventional neuroleptics . It has antipsychotic properties.

ATTENTION
In the event of an unexplained fever associated with muscle stiffness (which could be due to the drug), do not continue treatment without medical advice: risk of neuroleptic malignant syndrome .
Precautions are necessary in case of diabetes , epilepsy , heart disease ( old or recent myocardial infarction , angina pectoris , heart failure , heart rhythm disorders ), abnormal blood pressure , risk of thrombosis , difficulty in swallowing, history of addiction to gambling, dementia in an elderly person, phenylketonuria ( orodispersible tablet : presence of aspartame).
In case of significant weight gain, appearance of abnormal or involuntary movements, marked drowsiness during the day, contact your doctor without delay. A change in treatment may be considered.
Avoid alcoholic beverages: increased risk of drowsiness.
Given its potential adverse effects , this medication may not be compatible with driving or operating dangerous machinery in some people. Make sure on the occasion of the first catches that you tolerate this medicine well before driving or using a machine.
INTERACTIONS OF THE DRUG ABILIFY WITH OTHER SUBSTANCES
Medicines containing the following substances are likely to modify the efficacy of the treatment: carbamazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone, griseofulvin, rifabutin, rifampicin, St. John's wort, ketoconazole, itraconazole, quinidine, fluoxetine, paroxetine, antiproteases .
Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking an antihypertensive , other sedatives ( tranquilizers , sleeping pills ) or an antidepressant .
FERTILITY, PREGNANCY AND LACTATION
PREGNANCY :
The effect of this medicine during pregnancy is not well known: only your doctor can assess the possible risk of its use in your case.
FEEDING WITH MILK :
This medication passes into breast milk: breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE AND DOSAGE OF THE DRUG ABILIFY
This medication is taken once a day, at the same time of day, with or without food.
Orodispersible tablets are to be placed directly on the tongue, with or without water. They can also be dissolved beforehand in a little water.
The oral solution should be taken as it is, without being diluted in liquid or mixed with food.
USUAL DOSE:
In the treatment of schizophrenia :
Adult over 18 years old : 10 to 15 mg per day. The maximum dose should not exceed 30 mg per day.
Adolescent over 15 years old : 10 mg per day. This dosage is obtained by using the oral solution to gradually increase the dose.
Adult over 18 years old : 15 mg per day. For the prevention of recurrences of manic episodes , treatment is maintained at the same dose for a period set by the doctor.
Adolescent over 13 years old : the starting dose is 2 mg per day (using the oral solution) and is gradually increased to 10 mg per day. The duration of treatment should be as short as necessary to control symptoms and should not exceed 12 weeks.
TIPS
In the treatment of schizophrenia and other psychoses , neuroleptics provide effective control of the disease, but modifying or stopping treatment inadvertently exposes you to a serious relapse.
The oral solution should not be stored for more than 6 months after opening the bottle. Remember to note the date of first use on the packaging or on the bottle.
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF THE DRUG ABILIFY
Common (less than 1 in 10 people): headache, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, difficulty digesting, constipation , excessive salivation, dizziness, insomnia, agitation, anxiety, drowsiness, involuntary movements, tremor and blurred vision.
Uncommon (less than 1 in 100 people): orthostatic hypotension (feeling dizzy when standing up), depression .
Adverse effects reported after marketing, of unknown frequency: palpitations , onset or worsening of diabetes , weight gain, anorexia , nervousness, addiction to gambling, suicidal thoughts (inherent to the disease), slurred speech , rash , excessive sweating, cramps, muscle stiffness or pain, weakness, difficulty urinating, priapism , swelling of the hands, ankles or feet, convulsions , malaise, high blood pressure , thromboembolic accident, swallowing disorders with risk of food sniffing ,inflammation of the pancreas, hepatitis , allergic reaction , abnormal blood count , low sodium level in the blood.
