WHAT IS ACARBOSE ZENTIVA PRESCRIBED FOR?

This medication is an antidiabetic . It acts locally in the intestine by delaying and decreasing the absorption of carbohydrates formed from several molecules, such as ordinary sugar ( sucrose ) or starch. It has no effect on simple sugars such as glucose.

It is used in the treatment of type 2 diabetes , in addition to the diet, alone or in combination with other antidiabetics .

CONTRAINDICATIONS OF THE DRUG ACARBOSE ZENTIVA

This medicine should not be used in the following cases:
  • digestion and absorption disorder, inflammatory colon disease, intestinal hernia, history of subocclusive syndrome ;

  • severe kidney failure ;

  • breastfeeding .

ATTENTION

A regular measurement of transaminases is necessary in people suffering from hepatic insufficiency .

In case of hypoglycemia caused by another anti- diabetic drug , taking ordinary sugar ( sucrose ) may not be effective. It is preferable to absorb glucose: ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

If intestinal obstruction is suspected (severe abdominal pain in a person with a history of abdominal surgery), treatment should be discontinued.

FERTILITY, PREGNANCY AND LACTATION

PREGNANCY :

Diabetes in pregnancy requires treatment with insulin . If pregnancy occurs while taking this medication, consult your doctor promptly to change your treatment.

FEEDING WITH MILK :

This medication is contraindicated during lactation.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE AND DOSAGE OF THE DRUG ACARBOSE ZENTIVA

The tablets should be swallowed at the start of a meal with a glass of water, or chewed with the first bites.

USUAL DOSE:

  • Adult over 18 years old : 50 to 100 mg, 3 times a day. In rare cases, the dosage can be increased up to 200 mg, 3 times a day.

TIPS

This medication alone does not expose you to the risk of hypoglycaemia .

The diabetic diet does not consist of a simple prohibition of carbohydrates ( sugars , bread, pasta...). In addition, certain foods containing sugar (especially cane sugar ) are likely to cause digestive discomfort and even diarrhea during treatment due to increased fermentation of carbohydrates in the colon; ask your doctor for advice.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF THE DRUG ACARBOSE ZENTIVA

Very common (more than 10% of patients): flatulence.

Common (1 to 10% of patients): abdominal pain, diarrhea ,

Uncommon (less than 1 in 100 patients): nausea, vomiting, difficult digestion, increased transaminases , jaundice.

Digestive side effects depend on dosage and diet. They tend to subside during treatment.

Of unknown frequency: allergic reaction (redness of the skin, urticaria ), potentially serious hepatitis , obstruction of the digestive tract (see Warning).
