This medicine is a biosimilar medicine to LANTUS.

IN WHICH CASE IS THE DRUG ABASAGLAR CARTRIDGE AND PEN PRESCRIBED?

It is an insulin close to human insulin , obtained by biotechnology . Its action is identical to that of natural insulin , but of longer duration. It is absorbed more slowly and more evenly, allowing only one injection per day.

ATTENTION

The start of the treatment supposes a correct training to inject insulin , control the glycemia with the finger, to look for sugar and acetone in the urines and to keep a notebook of surveillance.

Hypoglycaemia is the main complication of insulin treatment These are most often mild hypoglycemic illnesses, the main signs of which are: sweating, tremors, visual disturbances, double vision, sudden fatigue, food cravings, dizziness , difficulty concentrating. In this case, the diabetic must immediately absorb 3 to 6 sugar cubes or a sweet syrup.

Much more rarely, hypoglycaemia can be serious and lead to behavioral problems (comparable in particular to drunkenness), convulsions , or even loss of consciousness: 1 ampoule of GLUCAGEN must be injected immediately subcutaneously or intramuscularly , even through clothing when agitated. If the diabetic does not regain consciousness within minutes, notify an emergency service. If in doubt, it is safe to inject GLUCAGEN into a diabetic on insulin . In all cases, taking a snack or a meal is still necessary.

The other possible complication in the diabetic is the occurrence of ketoacidosis due to a significant lack of insulin . It can be triggered by an infection (which increases insulin requirements ): flu, cold, cystitis , abscess , etc. It is manifested by great fatigue, intense thirst and digestive disorders . It is then necessary to look for the presence of sugar and acetone in the urine: the presence of both in large quantities confirms the diagnosis . Insulin treatmentmust not be stopped; the diabetic must follow the instructions of his doctor and, if necessary, contact him urgently.

Avoid taking alcoholic beverages on an empty stomach or between meals: increased risk of hypoglycaemia .

Driver: hypoglycaemia may cause discomfort while driving or using machinery.

INTERACTIONS OF THE DRUG ABASAGLAR CARTRIDGE AND PEN WITH OTHER SUBSTANCES

Certain medications can cause blood sugar to become unbalanced . Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking a corticosteroid , high dose progestogen , beta blocker , ACE inhibitor , or medicine containing danazol, chlorpromazine, salbutamol, terbutaline, lanreotide, octreotide or high-dose aspirin.

FERTILITY, PREGNANCY AND LACTATION

PREGNANCY :

Insulin is suitable for diabetes in pregnant women or transient blood sugar disorders during pregnancy.

FEEDING WITH MILK :

Insulin treatment is not a contraindication to breastfeeding.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE AND DOSAGE OF THE DRUG ABASAGLAR CARTRIDGE AND PEN

This insulin should only be injected subcutaneously in the areas recommended by your doctor, trying to vary the injection sites to avoid the appearance of lipodystrophies ( nodules and thickening of the skin).

Cartridges should only be used with a Lilly reusable pen; ask your pharmacist or doctor for advice. The insulin cartridge must be taken out of the refrigerator 1 to 2 hours before insertion into the pen; then bleed any air contained in the cartridge.

The KwikPen is a ready-to-use pre-filled pen that should be discarded when the cartridge is empty.

The needle must be changed after each injection.

USUAL DOSE:

  • Adult and child over 2 years old : 1 injection per day, at any time of the day but without varying the time too much each day. The dose to be injected is adapted according to the results of the analyzes carried out by the diabetic or his entourage (surveillance book) and the advice of his doctor.

TIPS

It is prudent to have an equivalent syringe insulin available in case the pen is lost or malfunctions.

If you are using two pens to inject two insulins , make sure you can easily tell them apart.

For precise handling of the pen, follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer and be careful not to misplace it.

The safety of an insulin injection through clothing, without prior disinfection, is now established with certainty.

In the event of sporting activity, it is preferable to inject the insulin away from the working muscles to avoid too rapid absorption of the insulin . In addition, an adjustment of insulin doses is usually necessary according to the advice of the doctor.

Get in touch with diabetic associations: they provide useful information on the treatment and monitoring of diabetes .

Those around you should know how to recognize the signs of hypoglycaemia and be able to give you, in the event of loss of consciousness, a vial of GLUCAGEN . This is preferably stored in the refrigerator or, if necessary, at room temperature (below 25°C) for 2 years.

Be careful not to run out of insulin , especially during weekends and public holidays; when traveling, bring a reserve or your valid prescription. An insulin treatment certificate may be required to cross certain borders.

Insulin can be stored easily for 4 to 6 weeks at a temperature below 25°C and for several months at a temperature close to 0°C (but it should never be frozen). It degrades faster the higher the temperature.

In practice :
  • keep unopened cartridges in the lower part of the refrigerator. If this is impossible, do not keep them for more than 1 month;

  • keep opened cartridges out of the refrigerator for a maximum of 4 weeks, preferably in a clean and dry place, away from light and temperature rises (no more than 25°C);

  • accidental or unavoidable exposure to a temperature of the order of 30°C to 35°C is possible without damage for 2 or 3 days;

  • discard any cartridge suspected of having been exposed to freezing or excessive heat;

  • on long-haul travel, keep your insulin in your carry-on baggage to avoid exposure to excessive cold in the baggage hold.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS OF THE DRUG ABASAGLAR CARTRIDGE AND PEN

Hypoglycemia (see Caution), slight visual disturbances at the start of treatment, subcutaneous fatty nodules ( lipodystrophies ).

Rarely: mainly cutaneous allergic reaction .

How much Abasaglar should I take?

You need one injection of ABASAGLAR every day, at the same time of the day. ABASAGLAR is injected under the skin. Do NOT inject ABASAGLAR in a vein, since this will change its action and may cause hypoglycaemia.

Is Abasaglar the same as Lantus?

Insulin glargine biosimilar (Abasaglar) is licensed for the same indication as insulin glargine (Lantus). It is licensed for the treatment of diabetes mellitus in adults, young people and children aged 2 years and above. The dose regimen (dose and timing) should be individually adjusted.

Is Abasaglar long-acting insulin?

ABASAGLAR is a long-acting insulin. Your doctor may tell you to use it in combination with a short- acting insulin or with tablets used to treat high blood sugar levels. Many factors may influence your blood sugar level.

When does BASAGLAR insulin peak?

Like Lantus, Basaglar has its peak effect about 12 hours after injection – after this 12-hour mark, the effect of basal insulin glargine (whether Basaglar or Lantus) will slowly start to wear off, which means glucose levels could start to rise.

How many units of Basaglar is normal?

You'll likely start with 0.2 units/kg each day. The maximum dosage of Basaglar for people with type 2 diabetes is 10 units once daily. So, for example, if you weigh 50 kg (about 110 lbs), your dosage would be 10 units of Basaglar each day. You should inject your dose once daily, at the same time each day.

How much does Basaglar lower blood sugar?

In this study, people took Basaglar with an oral diabetes medication for 6 months. At the end of the study, HbA1c was reduced by an average of 1.3% in people taking Basaglar with an oral drug.

How long does abasaglar last?

The action of Lantus/Abasaglar lasts for 20-24 hours. It is injected once daily at the same time every day (+/- one hour at most). Lantus/Abasaglar is taken either with the evening meal or around bedtime to ensure that if the dose 'wears off' before 24 hours, it does so during the day and not during the night.

How many days does Basaglar last?

Basaglar KwikPen is a long-acting insulin that starts to work several hours after injection and keeps working evenly for 24 hours.
