In humans there are three types of melanin (pigment):
- Eumelanin:
An unstained brown pigment, giving the skin its brown color and forming phenylalanine.
- Phaeomelanin:
Red hair color is formed by cysteine and tyrosine.
- Neuromelanin:
The dye of gray matter in the brain.
