If tonsillitis or pharyngeal pharyngitis is treated properly with primary prevention, penicillin is the best medication in these cases. It should be emphasized that penicillin should be given for 10 days even if the symptoms the patient complains during the first few days of treatment have disappeared. The development of heart attack with long-acting penicillin can also be stopped in a continuous manner to prevent any occurrence of rheumatic fever. This is called secondary prevention.
