Hemorrhagic ulcers occur in about 10-15% of patients with ulcers.
Bleeding may be the first appearance of the ulcer, and the overall mortality rate due to haemorrhage is 7%.
Bleeding from gastrointestinal ulcers occurs in about 90% of patients with medical treatment, while about 10% of patients need surgical treatment.
Surgical intervention usually involves linking the bleeding vessel to the ulcer.
