Development of boys and girls from ten to twelve months

 Development of boys and girls:

In this article we are going to talk about the language, motor and socio-affective development of our baby  between  the tenth and twelfth month of age.

We will start with linguistic development:

The baby has gone from babbling to making  slight sounds of vowels and consonants  and his language begins to resemble more that of adults. She understands phrases that people address to her (receptive language) and, in the same way, she is able to make herself understood through certain  gestures, sounds and facial expressions, among others (expressive language).

What a child should be able to do between 10 and 12 months:

Between  ten  and  twelve  months, our baby should be able to:
  •  Understand and execute simple commands.
  •  Use simple gestures, such as moving your head from side to side to say “no” or waving your hand to say “bye-bye”.
  •  Make sounds with intonation changes (sounds like normal language).
  •  Say “mama” and “papa” and make exclamations like “oh-oh”.
  •  Try to imitate the words you hear.
  •  Pronounce around four meaningful words.
  •  Begin to associate a sound or word with an object or idea.
  •  Entertain yourself with rounds and songs with simple movements.
  •  Recognize and point to different parts of their body.
  •  Imitate sounds of animals or objects.

Warning signs that should be reported to the pediatrician:

We must be attentive to recognize some  warning signs  and notify our pediatrician if  our baby is 12 months old:
  •  Does not say simple words like “mama” or “dada”.
  •  Does not learn to use gestures such as waving or nodding.
  •  Does not point to things and try to name them.
  •  Does not imitate sounds of objects or animals.
  •  Does not comply with simple orders.

Now, let's talk about motor development:

The  baby is constantly on the move . He crawls better  and better and can  stand up on his own. Thus, she can  move around the room  and observe everything. In addition, he begins to pick up objects using the  upper digital pincer  (index and thumb), which makes it easier for him to explore and manipulate objects.

At this age, babies are very active and their  curiosity  leads them to investigate, touch and take everything within their reach, therefore, we must take into account the risks to which  our  baby is exposed, since  the plugs, sharp objects and electronic devices become factors for possible accidents.

Between  ten  and  twelve  months, our baby should be able to:
  •  tend to stop.
  •  Take small steps between furniture and walls.
  •  When standing he is able to sit.
  •  Observe the objects individually and separately from the others, and then carry two small objects with one hand.
  •  Climb up and down from chairs and furniture.
  •  Opening drawers to explore their content is very curious.
  •  It will get loose when walking on mice.
  •  Climb up and down stairs.
  •  He curls up and bends over.
  •  Carefully pick up small objects.
  •  Place and remove objects inside a box.
  •  Your index finger and thumb work most effectively as a pincer.
  •  Towards the end of this stage he can intentionally throw objects and catch them more accurately.
  •  Wave hello if you have been taught.
  •  He insists on feeding himself even if it is difficult for him to do so.

Warning signs that should be reported to the pediatrician:

We must be attentive to recognize some  warning signs  and notify our pediatrician if  our baby is 12 months old:
  •  Unable to stand with assistance.
  •  It does not look for the things that it sees hidden.
  •  He doesn't point to things.
  •  He does not use gestures, such as waving his hands or nodding his head.

Finally, we will talk about socio- affective development:

For this stage, the baby seeks greater proximity and establishes interactions with one or more people , which means that he likes to  be accompanied  and  receive attention.

Similarly, she generates greater dependence on her mother and because of this, "separation anxiety" may appear , that is, she clings and cries much more when you have to leave him; In addition, she will begin to realize that if you are not by her side, it is because she is in another place and that will give her more anguish.

Also, she shows fear of being in strange places and she is more aware of what is socially right or wrong for her.

What a child should be able to do between 10 and 12 months:

Between ten and twelve  months, our baby should be able to:
  •  Imitate gestures, social expressions and sounds.
  •  Show preferences for one or more toys.
  •  Show fear of strange places.
  •  Imitate movements that adults do.
  •  He won't always cooperate.
  •  When he does something wrong, he shows guilt.
  •  Recognize people in the family and have some "favorite" acquaintances.
  •  He takes an interest in older children and tries to join in their games.

Warning signs that should be reported to the pediatrician:

We must be attentive to recognize some  warning signs  and notify our pediatrician if  our baby is 12 months old:

  •  Does not repeat sounds that he hears.
  •  Do not try to imitate what other people do.
  •  They do not show empathy or there is a lack of interest in relating to others, even with their own family.
