URINARY DISCOMFORT, FREQUENT URGE TO URINATE?

FREQUENT URGE TO URINATE?

Urinary discomfort, caused by the proliferation of bacteria of intestinal origin such as Escherichia coli (85% - 95% of cases) and by their attachment to the walls of the bladder and/or urethra, result from the proximity between the anus and the external opening of the urethra. In some cases, they can also affect the ureter and the kidneys.

An effective defense system

Composed of 96% water, urine, free of microorganisms, contains salts and organic components. The urinary flow as well as the acid character of the urine are two major assets to preserve the urinary system from pathogenic agents.

In addition, the very smooth surface of the urethra and the shape of the ureters help prevent the rise of bacteria, while the bladder wall contains essential immune cells to ensure permanent protection. Nevertheless, bacteria sometimes manage to reach the urethra and then the bladder, responsible for urinary discomfort.

Contributing factors...

Many factors can cause urinary discomfort :

  • Sexual intercourse, favoring the transmission of bacteria.
  • Excessive, insufficient or unsuitable intimate hygiene conducive to the spread of bacteria.
  • Clothing that is too tight or synthetic causing a phenomenon of “maceration”.
  • Pregnancy, the pressure exerted by the baby.
  • A slow transit.
  • Insufficient water consumption.

What are the characteristic signs?

Urinary discomfort is characterized by:

  • Pressure / heaviness in the lower abdomen.
  • A frequent urge to urinate in small quantities.
  • A burning sensation when urinating (during urination).
  • Cloudy urine accompanied by unpleasant odors.
  • If it spreads to the kidneys, other signs (fever, vomiting, etc.) may appear.

What are the daily actions to adopt to avoid urinary discomfort?

First of all, it is recommended to drink regularly and in sufficient quantity to promote urinary flow and thus prevent the attachment of bacteria to the walls of the urinary system. Other simple gestures can prevent the appearance of urinary discomfort:

  • Do not hold back the urge to urinate for too long.
  • Take steps to promote regular bowel movement.
  • Wipe the intimate area from front to back.
  • Urinate immediately after each sexual intercourse.
  • Have a regular and non-aggressive intimate hygiene.
  • Avoid wearing too tight or synthetic clothes.

Specific supplementation can also be of interest, particularly in people prone to urinary discomfort or in the event of a recurrence. For example, heather  is a plant particularly recognized for contributing to the proper functioning of the urinary tract.

Frequent urge to urinate: to better understand

Most people urinate about 4 to 6 times a day, most often during the day. An adult eliminates an average of 700 ml to 3 liters of urine per day. Excessive urination results in an increased volume of urine (polyuria) and/or the more frequent urge to go to the toilet.

What are the most common causes of urinary frequency?

  • bladder infection
  • urinary incontinence
  • benign prostatic hyperplasia (in men)
  • stones in the urinary tract

And what about the causes of polyuria?

  • diabetes (sweet and tasteless)
  • excessive drinking
  • treatments, medications, or substances such as tea, coffee, or alcohol
