What are the functions of corneal layers?
1. The epithelial layer: is the outer layer of the cornea and represents about 10% of the total tissue thickness.
2. Bowman layer: This layer is located directly under the subterranean layer of the former layer, which is also transparent. It is made up of strong protein fibers found in the form of layers also known as collagen.
3. The basic layer: Found under the Bowman layer, which forms about 90% of the thickness of the cornea and consists of 785 water, 16% collagen, and does not contain blood vessels The cornea derives its strength from collagen in addition to its elasticity and shape.
4. The dermis (the posterior membrane of the cornea) is the membrane that follows the underlying layer and is located beneath it. It is a very thin layer of tissue but it is strong and its function is to protect the cornea and the eye more generally from infection and injury.
5. The endothelial layer: It is also a very thin layer, and the inner and final layer of the cornea and endothelial cells is important in maintaining the transparency of the cornea and its non-opacity.
