Opioid analgesics, such as morphine, can be used to complement general anesthesia, usually combined with O2 and muscle relaxants. Frequent doses should be given with extreme care, as breathing loss may persist during the postoperative period.
The antagonist in particular, Naloxone, will immediately reverse this respiratory depression, but the dose may need to be repeated. Other recovery measures must be available.
It is important to remember that naloxone will also interfere with the sedative effect of opioid substances.
