Which are the ways in which the proximal contacts can be checked?
a- Use a pencil.
b- Use a shim stock.
c- Use a silicone checker.
d- Use a dental floss.
e- Only b & d.***

A total of 969 proximal contacts in forty volunteer subjects was examined for proximal contact integrity with shim stock.
It passed uninhibited through 88% of the contacts.
Neither sex nor age affected the evaluation; however, shim stock was more likely to pass through contacts with enamel surfaces than those which were restored.

What is the correct way to floss?
Proper use of dental floss removes plaque and food particles from places that the toothbrush cannot easily reach: under the gum and between the teeth.
As plaque buildup can cause tooth decay and gum disease, daily flossing is recommended.
Take advantage of flossing and adopt the following technique:
- Taking about 45 cm (18 ") of dental floss, wrap most of it around the ring finger, leaving 3 or 5 cm (1 or 2") of floss to work
- Hold the floss between the thumbs and index fingers, and gently slide it up and down between the teeth
- Bend the dental floss gently around the base of each tooth, making sure it passes under the gum. Never hit or force the thread, as it can cut or hurt the delicate gingival tissue
- Use sections of clean yarn as you go from tooth to tooth
- To remove the thread, use the same movement back and forth, pulling it up and away from the teeth

What type of dental floss should I use?
There are two types of dental floss:
- Nylon dental floss (or multifilament)
- PTFE floss (monofilament)
The nylon floss may or may not be waxed, and there is a wide variety of flavors.
Since this type of dental floss is made up of many strands of nylon, it sometimes tears or frays, especially between the teeth with tight contact points.
While it is more expensive, single-floss dental floss (PTFE) slides easily between teeth, even between those with tight spaces, and usually does not fray. If you use them correctly, both types of dental floss are excellent for removing plaque and food debris.
