What are the risk factors for osteoporosis?
There are several types of risk factors for osteoporosis, depending on age, sex, history, and lifestyle.
Factors increasing the risk of osteoporosis are well known. Some are modifiable, others are not. People with these factors are therefore more likely to develop osteoporosis. They are distinguished in two categories.
General factors:
- Age: as you get older, the bone mass decreases. From the age of 50, the frequency of osteoporosis increases.
- Sex: Osteoporosis is more common in women, especially after menopause. After 50 years, osteoporosis affects one in three women and one in five men.
- Genetic predisposition: Children whose parents have osteoporosis have lower bone mass. They are at increased risk of osteoporosis.
- Ethnicity: White and Asian populations are more frequently affected by osteoporosis.
- A history of vertebral compression, early menopause (or a disease that interferes with calcium absorption such as Crohn's disease), oral corticosteroid treatment for more than 3 months also increases the risk of osteoporosis.
Other factors depend on the way of life. It is therefore possible to modify them to prevent osteoporosis.
Lifestyle risk factors:
- The weight: being too thin (less than 49 kg) creates a greater risk of osteoporosis.
- An unbalanced diet: insufficient intake of calcium and vitamin D predispose to bone loss. In addition, excess alcohol (more than 3 drinks a day) and drinks containing caffeine have a harmful effect on the bones. Indeed, they cause a leak of calcium in the urine.
- Smoking: tobacco prevents the proper assimilation of calcium.
- Sedentary lifestyle: lack of physical activity or immobilization (following a cast, for example) promotes bone loss. The bone needs to be solicited to maintain good health.
- The lack of sunshine: Vitamin D is in the diet but only up to 10 to 20%. The rest is synthesized by the skin when it is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) rays.
If several factors, general or lifestyle related, are accumulated, the risk of osteoporosis is further increased.
