Onlay and inlay inlay:
Dental inlays in general are used to restore molars that have suffered mild or moderate caries, or to cover screaming or dental fractures as long as it is not necessary to place a dental crown. There are different types, but nowadays the ones that are most used are the so-called inlay and onlay inlays, which can be made of porcelain, composite resin and rarely of gold and offer numerous advantages over metallic amalgam inlays.
Inlay / onlay inlay characteristics:
This type of encrustation exerts a reinforcement of the tooth close to 75%.
They are manufactured with the same color of the tooth to be repaired, so they are barely noticeable from the outside.
They allow to preserve a structure of the tooth greater than in the case of metal inlays, which in most cases prevents further treatment and placement of crowns, bridges or implants.
Its duration is much longer than other conventional inlays and is close to 30 years.
They are frequently used to replace those of metallic amalgam.
The use of inlay inlays focuses on the repair of caries that affect the upper and emerging surfaces of the tooth, as well as for the replacement of amalgams for aesthetic reasons or because they have been damaged. For its preparation, an impression of the tooth is made previously and a provisional inlay is placed to seal the dental cavity.
From the impression the final inlay inlay will be manufactured, making sure that it fits perfectly and that its color is as close as possible to that of the tooth being repaired. In the following consultation the provisional one is removed and the definitive one is placed and adjusted.
Onlay Inlays:
Onlay inlays are used in more extensive caries than those that can be covered with inlay, in which conventional ones would fall or in which it would otherwise be necessary to place a cover. The placement of this type of encrustation does not require the carving of the tooth once the mandatory endodontics is performed, since its fixation is guaranteed by the adhesion systems currently available.
In addition, the materials with which the onlay inlays are made at no time come into contact with the gingival tissues, so that discomforts such as those generated by dental covers are avoided.
