Maryland Bridges:
The Maryland Bridge is a method used to replace a missing tooth without having to prepare neighboring teeth.
A Maryland bridge consists of a metal structure with a porcelain tooth connected to the front of the structure. The frame then ends as a false tooth with one or two metal wings on the side. These metal wings are ready to have a porous surface so as to receive a bonding agent, and the wings are glued to the back of the teeth on either side of the missing tooth.

Benefits of a "Maryland Bridge"
- The minimal tooth structure must be removed.
- The teeth of the pillar are not damaged. They are essentially left intact.
- Due to the conservative nature of the preparation, the risk of pulpal trauma is minimized.
Anesthesia is often useless for preparing teeth.
- Less periodontal irritation compared to the conventional bridge

Problems Associated with a Maryland Bridge:
Although useful, the Maryland Bridge has some problems with the use of the metal and the longevity of the bridge connection.
It is used only when a tooth is missing
The teeth are translucent. The metal support slightly darkens the teeth. The result is a slightly different color than the other front teeth. To overcome this problem, we design the structure to fit the palatal part of the tooth.
The false tooth is a porcelain fused to the metal. This will make him lose the natural translucency and vitality that other teeth have in them.
Metal wings tend to disintegrate, depending on mastication forces applied on the deck. Therefore, the bridge must be re-glued every few years.

In conclusion:
The Maryland Bridge is a success and has been used in dentistry for over 20 years. The quality and design of the bridge has been proven as a transitional and permanent prosthesis. It can take more than ten years to take care of them and maintain a good hygiene regime.
